Pancreas and Kidney - Pancreas Transplant Program

 Location: Aberhart Centre

Program provides care to patients undergoing a pancreas transplant.

Most patients referred to the pancreas transplant program have Type1 diabetes. Diabetic patients with kidney failure may also receive a kidney transplant at the same time as a pancreas transplant.

Entrance is located off University Avenue east of the Cross Cancer Institute south of Kaye Edmonton Clinic South and southwest of the University of Alberta Hospital. Many bus routes through area. LRT Health Sciences station nearby.

Service Providers May Include
Multidisciplinary Transplant Team

Patients are assessed by the pancreas transplant team using tests and interviews to see if they’re good candidates for surgery. Clients are considered for a pancreas transplant if it’s likely the surgery will help the person live longer and have a better quality of life.

Clients are assessed for:

  • how urgent their need is
  • health and medical history
  • medical test results

Clients should:

  • be able to follow a complex medical treatment plan
  • be emotionally stable
  • have social support
  • have realistic attitudes about their illness and the transplant surgery
