Intensive Care Unit

Provides care for adults with serious, life-threatening illnesses.

Provides life support to critically ill adult patients with serious, life-threatening illnesses from a variety of causes, which may include:

  • shock
  • pneumonia
  • trauma
  • transplantation
  • severe surgical illness
  • other serious medical illnesses caused by kidney, liver failure, and diabetes

Equipment is used to monitor patients and provide life support, including:

  • helping the patient to breathe
  • supporting vitals signs with medicine
  • cleaning a person's blood with different types of dialysis
