Gastrointestinal Motility Lab

Provides diagnostic motility testing to assess the strength, coordination, and movement of the gastrointestinal tract.

The Motility Lab operates two procedure rooms, each staffed by a dedicated Registered Nurse (RN) who performs diagnostic motility studies.

Please note: Patients do not receive a formal consultation with a physician during their visit. This lab provides diagnostic testing only.

All testing is performed on an outpatient basis and may include:

  • Manometry
  • pH impedance testing

These tests may be used to assess symptoms such as:

  • Heartburn
  • Reflux
  • Non-cardiac chest pain
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Fecal incontinence
  • Constipation

This lab provides services to patients from Central Zone, Edmonton Zone, North Zone and North West Territories.

Once testing is complete, results are typically forwarded to the referring provider within 5–10 business days

Wait Times

Due to the limited number of Motility Labs in Alberta (3), wait times for this service may be longer than for many other referred procedures.

Patients are prioritized based on clinical need.
