Alberta Kidney Care Kinesiology Services
Kinesiology supports people with kidney disease to stay active, healthy, and independent, helping maintain quality of life while reducing risks such as weakness, fatigue, falls, pain, and poor mobility. They provide guidance on fitness, daily activities, pain management, recovery, preventing complications, and preparing for treatments such as kidney transplant. The kinesiologist will talk to you about your current activity levels and assess your strength, balance and mobility. They can help you meet your health and fitness goals by:
- Providing safe exercises you can do at home.
- Refer you to exercise programs in the community.
- Refer you to a virtual exercise program that is right for you.
- Get you started on the dialysis bike program or the dialysis strength training program (available at most hemodialysis clinics in Alberta)
- Work with you, and recommend exercises or non-drug options (like self-acupressure, meditation, and myofascial release) can help with dialysis related symptoms (like weakness, low energy, restless legs, itchiness, nausea, poor sleep, joint pain, poor balance, and cramping.
- Help you create a safe environment at home to prevent falls.
- Help you to prepare for a transplant if that is your goal.
