Hepatopancreaticobiliary Group

Hepatopancreaticobiliary (HPB) surgery provides specialized care for patients with lesions of the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts and pancreas.

This includes tumours in these organs, liver metastases, biliary strictures, choledochal cysts, and pancreatitis. The HPB surgical team is based at Foothills Medical Centre and provides tertiary and quaternary care to patients across Southern Alberta and parts of Southern British Columbia.

Access
Eligibility

The following conditions are considered Urgent:

  • severe acute pancreatitis with necrosis (AP)
  • newly diagnosed lesion, tumor or masses (suspicious for cancer) of the liver, pancreas, bile ducts or gallbladder
  • complicated pancreatitis
  • complicated gallstone disease
  • any cystic lesions of the liver, pancreas, duodenum, bile ducts
  • obstructive jaundice
  • liver metastases of any origin that require assessment for ablative treatments or resection

The following conditions are considered Emergent:

  • complete obstruction
  • ascending cholangitis of bleeding from tumor of pancreas, liver or biliary system
  • traumatic injuries to the bile duct, liver or pancreas
