Inpatient Orthopaedics Surgery - Fractures, Joint Replacements, Backs, Musculoskletal Tumors

Provides adult, ages 16 and older inpatient Orthopaedic pre and post-operative surgical care.

Provides care to patients in hospital for elective and urgent / emergency surgeries for orthopedic problems. Regular surgeries include:

  • total hip, knee and shoulder replacements
  • spinal surgeries
  • hip, ankle, upper and lower leg, elbow surgeries
  • tumour resections
  • fractured hip surgeries

Referral Needed

A family doctor's referral to an orthopedic surgeon is required. Patients who have orthopedics trauma (fractures) are accepted through the Edmonton Orthopedic Consult Line, Emergency Room, or Orthopedic Clinic.

Service Access

Patients are referred by their family doctor to an orthopedic surgeon who schedules the surgery and admits the patient to the unit. Patients who have orthopedic trauma (fractures)are accepted through the Orthopedic Consult Line, Emergency Room, or Orthopedic Clinic.


Wait Times

Patients scheduled for hip, knee and shoulder arthroplasty surgery will be seen at the Edmonton Bone and Joint Centre for their pre-op assessment, preparation and teaching. Wait times for surgery after this varies.

Other elective surgeries are seen in the Pre-Admission Clinic for their asessment, preparation and teaching or they may just have telephone visit.

Fractured Hip patient are seen through emergency and have a high priority with a goal of having surgery within 36 hours or sooner of injury.
