Gamma Knife

The Gamma Knife uses highly focused beams of radiation to treat brain conditions.

Gamma Knife is used as an alternative to or may complement conventional surgery that treats brain conditions including:

  • brain tumors
  • blood vessel malformations
  • severe facial nerve pain
  • certain movement disorders

Gamma Knife treatment is an outpatient procedure and patients can resume normal activities almost immediately.

The initial consult appointment and treatment follow-up, as well a the treatment procedure will be at the University of Alberta Hospital, Walter Mackenzie Centre.

Eligibility

The following information is considered to determine eligibility for the Gamma Knife treatment:

  • Medical and surgical history
  • Clinical examinations
  • Imaging studies, e.g. MRI, CT
