Rocky Mountain Program

The Rocky Mountain Program (RMP) is the Alberta provincial in-custody treatment program for those with sexually-based offences. Patients must be serving a jail sentence of less than 2 years as the program is in a provincial jail. RMP has replaced the old Phoenix Program, which was located at Alberta Hospital Edmonton.
- treatment is provided by an Alberta Health Services multidisciplinary team of psychologists, nurses, social workers, and physicians
- treatment takes place at the Calgary Correctional Centre
- offenders referred to the RMP will participate in an intake assessment to determine their treatment needs & estimated risk of re-offending
- RMP includes 2-3 weekly group therapy sessions over ~6 months (treatment frequency & duration is dependent on the offender's estimated level of risk)
- through both process-oriented & psycho-education groups, participants will address their individual treatment needs. Criminogenic factors identified through research will be the primary focus
- RMP uses a “best practices” approach & is not a “one size fits all” program. Concurrent individual therapy will be offered on an as-needed basis, and as resources allow.
- upon completion of the RMP, post-treatment evaluations will determine whether follow-up treatment is recommended. Follow-up treatment is available through forensic outpatient services in Calgary or Edmonton
- regular attendance, active participation, & completion of homework assignments are essential components of treatment. Absences from sessions & non-completion of homework may lengthen the time in treatment and/or lead to dismissal from the program

EligibilityThis is a program for adult males only. The ability to read and write English is required for the full program.
Due to the level of homework required, patients must read at a grade 6 level and have an IQ>80 to manage the group. Those not meeting those criteria might be offered some case management, but would not be able to participate in the full program.

Service AccessHealthcare providers should consult the Alberta Referral Directory for service referral information.
The patient must be moved to the Calgary Correctional Centre after sentencing and be settled and cooperative enough to be placed in the RMP treatment wing of the jail.

Wait TimesIt can take a month or more for the jail to send RMP all the referral information for a patient to start the program. To reduce waiting time, it is helpful if the involved lawyers and / or treating clinicians send any assessments, criminal history, and details of the offence directly to RMP asap.
