Minimum Collection Volume:

3 mL plasma or serum

Specimen Collection Requirements:

Fill tubes to capacity (minimal headspace).
Avoid Hemolysis
Grossly hemolyzed specimens will be rejected.
Do not open the tube for any reason prior to Ionized Calcium analysis.
Do not freeze. Frozen specimens will be rejected.

Red Deer only:

Heel pokes are not acceptable. Pediatric specimens may be collected using a syringe and transferred IMMEDIATELY into a minimum of 2 SST Amber Microtainers (fill completely).
Unopened, centrifuged specimens are stable for 24 hours at room temperature or 7 days at 2-8C.

Collections by Red Deer ICU only

Light green Lithium heparin whole blood specimen is allowed. Tube must be filled to capacity; partially filled tubes may be rejected. Avoid Hemolysis. Unopened specimens are stable for 1 hour at room temperature.
