Clinical Indications: | Postnatal evaluation for RhIG eligibility is performed on Rh Negative, Rh Unknown, or Rh Variant mothers of Rh Positive newborns, to determine RhIG eligibility. This test is also performed on RhD Positive mothers who have not had an ABORH and ABSC performed during the current pregnancy. For Neonatal testing see Neonatal Evaluation | ||||||||||
Test Includes: | Evaluation of maternal ABORH and antibody status. May be based on historical results and/or testing. May include Fetal Maternal Hemorrhage Screen if mother is Rh negative and Neonate is Rh positive. | ||||||||||

Specimen Collection Requirements: | It is best to wait about an hour after delivery to allow any fetal blood to mix thoroughly in the maternal circulation, but the sample should be collected as soon as possible thereafter. | ||||||||||

Transportation: | Transport at room temperature within 6 hours of collection. If delivery to the laboratory will exceed 6 hours, transport at refrigerated temperature. Specimen must be received at performing site within 24 hours of collection. | ||||||||||
Method and Interpretation of Results: | An Rh negative, Rh unknown, or Rh variant mother is eligible for RhIG if she has not previously formed an immune anti-D and has delivered an Rh positive neonate (or stillbirth). | ||||||||||
