Collection Alert:

Fecal Calprotection requires a separate, sterile collection container and requisition. This test cannot be combined with other stool testing, with the exception of specimens collected in the South Sector, which may be combined with stool elastase.

Processing:

All Zones:

Patient must deliver the specimen and requisition to a APL Patient Service Centre as soon as possible (within 12 hours of collection).
The specimen must be refrigerated or kept on an ice pack once received at the Patient Service Centre.

Northwest Territories & Nunavut only:

Patient must deliver the specimen and the requisition to the laboratory as soon as possible.
Freeze specimen upon receipt in lab.

Transportation:

All Zones:

Transport at refrigerated temperature.
If a delay in transport of greater than 72 hours from collection to performing location, transport frozen.

Northwest Territories & Nunavut only:

Transport frozen.

Chemiluminescent immunoassay (CLIA) on Liaison by DiaSorin Inc.

		Greater than 120 ug/g	Elevated The patient should be referred for consultation or physician advice.
	Monitoring of known IBD patients	Greater than 250 µg/g	Result suggests active inflammation.
0 up to 4 years	High levels of fecal calprotectin are commonly observed in pediatric patients less than 4 years of age. Robust pediatric reference intervals have not been established for this age group. Clinical correlation is required. However, for evaluation of patients with GI symptoms, results greater than 200 µg/g warrant discussion with Pediatrics GI.
