For Your Appointment

Remember to bring your child’s Alberta Healthcare card and a piece of photo ID.

For ongoing regular clinic appointments please bring the following:

  1. A written record of your child’s blood glucose levels for two weeks and the current insulin dose.
  2. Your child’s blood glucose meter(s).
  3. Ketone strips (blood or urine testing).
  4. Snacks and fast-acting glucose to treat hypoglycemia.
  5. Snacks or meals that occur at the time of your appointment.

Finding Us

The Pediatric Diabetes Education Centre is located on the 1st floor of the Stollery Children’s Hospital in 1C4. From the 114 street main entrance of the Stollery Children’s Hospital, once you have walked in the doors with the Stollery bear immediately turn left and enter the door to 1C4. If you see the glass elevators and snack bar to the left in the main hospital you have missed the Pediatric Diabetes Education Centre.

The main public parkade is located at the corner of 112 street and 83 Avenue. The entrance to the parkade is located on 83 Avenue. Take the pedway that leads from the parkade into the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute.

Proceed to the Information Desk for directions, or follow the signs to the Stollery Children’s Hospital.

What to Expect

Newly Diagnosed Patients

At diagnosis we provide four half-days of intensive outpatient diabetes education to the patients and families; this introduction is designed to cover the basic information for diabetes management. Families outside of the Edmonton area may need to arrange accommodations in Edmonton for these four days, please contact us should you require assistance.

Regular Clinic Appointments

Your ongoing appointments with Pediatric Diabetes Education Centre may include access to the following program:

  • Support to children and their families with diabetes
  • Counselling
  • Nutrition education
  • Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes education
  • Insulin pump therapy in cooperation with the Alberta Provincial Insulin Pump Program
  • Multiple Daily Injection Therapy
  • Transition clinic
  • Assorted workshops
