Inner City Health and Wellness Program

The Inner City Health and Wellness Program is aimed at improving health outcomes and health care access for patients with substance use disorders and/or those who are socially vulnerable. The Addiction Recovery and Community Health Team delivers specialty consult services to emergency department patients and hospital inpatients at the Royal Alexandra Hospital site only.

The Addiction Recovery and Community Health (ARCH) Team, working with a patient's care team in the emergency department (ED) or inpatient setting team can assist with:

  • complicated drug and alcohol withdrawal
  • assessment and treatment recommendations for any substance misuse
  • motivational interviewing
  • initiation of maintenance of opioid agonist therapy
  • harm reduction supplies and overdose prevention
  • linkage to primary and community based care
  • housing, healthcare coverage and identification
  • health promotion and disease prevention

Research Team:

  • large scale patient outcome evaluation including a Calgary based comparison group
  • process evaluation which is gathering patient, hospital and community stakeholders' views on clinical service (ARCH Team)
  • developing a vision for inner city health research in Edmonton

Education Service:

  • educational sessions for inpatients
  • inner City Health Elective
  • grand Rounds
  • discussion groups

Eligibility

Patients must be an inpatient at the Royal Alexandra Hospital and have an active substance use disorder and / or be dealing with social inequity.
