Sexual Assault Response Team

Specially trained nurses who provide sexual assault examination and care for individuals 14 years and older.

The Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) is available in all 11 Edmonton-area emergency departments.

Outside of emergency departments, the SART Clinic is available for people who do not require additional medical, mental health, or social support. The clinic is by appointment only, and provides the same specialized sexual assault care in a non-hospital setting. The team provides compassionate, confidential, culturally sensitive, and nonjudgmental care to individuals who have been sexually assaulted in the last 7 days with or without police involvement.

Care includes:

- Medical and forensic examinations

- Testing and preventive medication for:

  • Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • Pregnancy

- Referrals for:

  • Counselling
  • Other healthcare services

Access to this service is by Emergency Room visit only, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Outside of emergency departments, the SART Clinic is by appointment only, Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Eligibility

Available to individuals aged 14 and older who have been sexually assaulted in the previous 7 days.

Children 13 years and younger who have been sexually assaulted should go to the Stollery within the first 3 days.

Service Access

Emergency Department:

If you have any urgent or emergent medical needs, go to any Emergency Department listed in the service locations and tell the triage nurse you would like to see the SART nurse.

SART Clinic:

For people who do not require additional medical, mental health, or social supports, you can call the toll-free number to speak directly with a SART nurse about your options for care.

If you have questions that are not urgent, you can also or call the office number and leave a voicemail. The next available nurse will respond as soon as possible (nurses may be out of the office for extended periods seeing patients).
