We celebrate our people

We say thank you

Our people make everything we do possible. In 2016, 23,366 e-cards were sent, 27,708 print cards were ordered and 12,113 long-service gifts were requested.

Patients and their families often tell us they’d like to connect with the people who took care of them. They can reach out to any caregiver through Thanks for Caring, or any first responder through Thank a Paramedic. As well, we launched our Because You Cared video series to offer a very special way for Albertans to say “thank you” to AHS staff who have made a significant difference in their lives.

Thank you for the team at the early loss pregnancy program for all their care and support during a difficult time. Their kindness will always be appreciated. Thank you for the time that you spend with women who experience such loss. We appreciate you.

I need to send out a huge ‘thank you’ to Mike and Cameron who were the responding paramedics this past Saturday when I experienced an anterior hip dislocation. Their bedside manner and determination to try to get me comfortable will never be forgotten by myself or my husband. These truly are amazing people that I was so lucky to have helping me.

We like to celebrate

High Prairie Health Complex employees from all departments organize potluck lunches to welcome new employees and to celebrate long-service milestones.

At the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge, the Staff Engagement Committee plans the annual Christmas party as well as monthly staff engagement events, such as Thanksgiving Pie Day, Pancake Breakfast for Whoop-up Days, Hot Dog Day for Spring Cleanup, Popcorn Days and Ice Cream Days.

In the east-central Alberta hamlet of Daysland (population 807), the staff committee at the Daysland Health Centre organizes tailgate parties, golf tournaments and other employee events.

We value our people

Awards are just one of the many ways we show our people how much we appreciate their efforts.

Every year, our President’s Excellence Awards celebrate staff, physicians and teams who demonstrate innovation, collaboration and patient-centred care. In 2016, we received 99 submissions representing the work of more than 1,228 employees and physicians.

Our Awards & Recognition Wall is also a place to salute our colleagues for their outstanding achievements and contributions.

We also receive awards. AHS Edmonton Zone hospitals placed 16th on the 2016 list of Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals, while Calgary Zone hospitals placed 18th.

Our plan is to continue to demonstrate that Alberta is an outstanding place for health research and innovation. We will keep working with our patients, clinician scientists, staff and partner universities to use research and innovation to improve healthcare and the lives of Albertans.

Dr. Verna Yiu, AHS President & CEO, presents the President’s Excellence Award for Outstanding Achievements in Research to Dr. Mayank Goyal from the ESCAPE Trial Team.

You may be intimidated by carving a turkey, I’m not! In over 20 years with AHS, I’ve probably carved over 1,000 lbs. of turkeys. I’m always up for the task of carving a flock of them for special occasions! I know that the turkeys I carve make the meal special for our patients and residents. And that makes it special for me.

Inspired by the TV series Chopped, four healthy, accessible, and affordable baskets of ingredients were picked for staff to create healthy dishes. “I aimed to create a recipe that played with contrasting textures, while showing off the bright, light flavours inspired from foods around the world.
