Our People Strategy is about creating a workplace where we feel safe, healthy and included.
How we move impacts our health. We offer more than 160 employee fitness discounts to recreational facilities so fitness is affordable and accessible to our staff across the province. We also have programs, office ergonomics and resources to ensure our people use the proper techniques and equipment to prevent injuries.
Our Work Safe Blog is a web feature where we share our workplace health and safety stories, concerns and ideas. In 2016, 48 posts received more than 56,000 views and more than 170 employee comments.
Our Wellness Champion Network is founded on the idea that improving wellness can be a team effort. Each month, Wellness Champions provide education and some fun for coworkers to practice healthy living at their work sites.
Last summer, I joined the Wellness Champion Network and began planning wellness activities and initiatives for my public health team in Lac La Biche. Each month, we get together in the spirit of fun to inspire each other to stay active and make healthy choices that promote overall well-being. It’s also a great way to grow as a team and get to know your coworkers better!

We saved lives by getting immunized. In fact, we have a Battle of Alberta over it. Since 2011, AHS has achieved a 22 percent increase in our workforce influenza immunization rates.
At the Royal Alexandra Hospital, our people are the Guinness World Record holders for the most participants in a hand-sanitizing relay.
The Royal Alexandra Hospital’s atrium felt like a party during the relay,” says the 815th and final participant, Marilyn Wacko, RAH project consultant. “The whole place was buzzing — we had staff, physicians, patients and colleagues from across the zone coming in to help us beat the old record.
Through a partnership with Morneau Shepell, we provide staff with our Employee Family Assistance Program, free and confidential supports to all AHS employees and their immediate family members on a range of issues from financial and legal services to family and nutrition counselling to traumatic event support. We work to ensure our people have the care they need.
Through our Joint Workplace Health & Safety Committees, we promote health and safety. We ensure standards are met by identifying and recommending corrective actions for health and safety issues, and by discussing opportunities for improving health, safety and wellness in the workplace.
I didn’t take up cycling specifically to stay healthy or active; they’re definitely fringe benefits for me. Not worrying about parking, traffic, gas or car maintenance, being in total control of my journey, where I want to ride when I want to ride — these are what I enjoy most about cycling. Taking up winter cycling is a challenge, and some days I opt for the car, but I’ve learned to enjoy it and make the most of Alberta’s cold and snowy winters. I’m not an ‘expert,’ but I’m learning — and, most importantly, I’m learning at my own pace.
