Health Education
Health professionals facilitate classes covering a variety of topics, including condition-specific and general health topics. Classes are offered online with limited in-person options. Most classes are open to all adults living in Alberta.
For a full list of the class topics offered, visit Find AHLP Workshops and Classes.
Self-Management Workshops
Better Choices, Better Health® (BCBH®) self-management workshops are free for adults in Alberta who live with or support someone with a chronic health condition. These workshops build confidence, teach practical skills, and support a better quality of life. Workshops are open to adults and meet once a week for 2 ½ hours over  weeks.
Participants will learn about: symptom management, communication skills, handling difficult emotions, healthy eating, physical activity, and goal setting strategies.
There are two core options available:

  • BCBH® – Chronic Disease is for people managing a chronic condition and their support people.
  • BCBH®– Chronic Pain is for people whose main concern is chronic pain and their support people. In addition to the topics listed above, this workshop also discusses pacing, treatments for chronic pain and gentle exercise.

For more information or to register, visit Better Choices, Better Health.
Supervised Exercise Program
The Supervised Exercise Program supports adults who would benefit from guidance to safely increase physical activity and exercise. Participants learn how regular physical activity can help manage chronic health conditions and how to start or modify an exercise program based on their symptoms, abilities, and current level of activity.
Participants exercise under the guidance of healthcare professionals who help them build confidence with physical activity, address barriers to exercise, and develop a plan to continue being active in their community.
Services that may be available include:

  • supervised group exercise classes (offered in-person and virtually)
  • individualized activity coaching or follow-up
  • referral to relevant health education classes and / or chronic disease self-management workshops

Medical clearance may be required for individuals with a known history of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, renal disease, or those reporting signs or symptoms that may indicate increased risk during exercise.
