Type B - Secure Space Continuing Care Home

What is a Continuing Care Home Type B - Secure Space (formerly Designated Supportive Living Dementia)? This environment provides a purposeful home-like design with small groupings of private bedrooms and associated spaces with security features (i.e., secured spaces).

Scheduled & Unscheduled Professional & Personal Care with Licensed Practical Nurses & Health Care Aides in a Secure Space

Is for Individuals who may:

  • have more complex medical needs, including chronic disease management which can be safely supported with onsite licensed practical nurses
  • have moderate to advanced dementia
  • wander and are at risk of leaving without supervision
  • have unpredictable behaviours, but are not a safety risk to themselves or others
  • be unable to use a call system for help
  • have some dietary or food texture requirements
  • require assistance, supervision and/or monitoring to complete their daily activities such as:
  • assistance to eat meals (including tube feeding) 
  • grooming and hygiene
  • medication assistance or administration

Who will provide your care?

  • health care aides are onsite 24 hours a day to provide support and personal care
  • professional nursing care available onsite by a licensed practical nurse 24 hours a day
  • depending on the needs of the resident, professional care such as rehabilitation or nursing, is coordinated by a case manager.
  • medical care is provided by either the resident’s physician/nurse practitioner or a site designated physician/nurse practitioner that visits the site regularly.

Eligibility

Clients are assessed by AHS Transition Services to ensure they are waitlisted for the most appropriate Designated Living Option.

Service Access

Referrals can be made to AHS Transition Services by an AHS Case Manager or by calling Community Care Access at 403-943-1920.

Potential clients will be assessed by AHS Transition Services and placed on a waitlist. Wait times vary.

Fees
  • Accommodation fees set by Alberta Health cover rent, meals, housekeeping, building amenities and some recreation programming
  • the individual provides or pays for room furnishings, medication, medical and surgical supplies for chronic wounds, personal medical equipment and incontinence products, cable, phone and internet, personal laundry, hair salon fees, toiletries, and outings
  • AHS Case Managers can assist clients to ensure they are accessing all available financial supports
