What does this job look like at AHS?

Carpenter positions vary in tasks and responsibilities from repairing, renovating, building, modifying and erecting structures and fixtures in accordance with local building codes, using hand or power tools. They are responsible for applying and repairing cement and plaster, doors and windows, as well as analyzing department requests and problems and recommending solutions. Carpenters repair cupboards, shelving, cabinets, desks, tables, chairs, benches and other fixtures.

As part of their role, carpenters prepare cost estimates and order supplies and materials, plan work schedules and methods of work, and measure and mark materials. Carpenters also assist in designing and implementing preventive maintenance programs that relate to their area of expertise. This includes drafting shop drawings and specifications for carpentry projects, as well as assigning work and training non-journeyman workers assigned to assist projects.

Carpenters trim parts and joints for a snug fit, bore holes, glue, fit clamps, sand, surface and edge for fine finishing and install and maintain hardware. They perform maintenance duties such as installation of bulletin boards, counter tops, cabinets, doors, door hardware and furniture repair. Carpenters conduct preventative maintenance on building structures, fixtures and equipment including building exterior repair.

Carpenters work in a number of different facilities including hospitals, medical centers and specialty institutions. Carpenters may work full-time or part-time hours. Shift schedules may include a combination of day, evening and weekend shifts.

The carpenter has frequent physical demands including extensive standing, walking, bending and lifting of heavy equipment and supplies. The carpenter may be required to deal with safety concerns and work in cramped and noisy conditions.
