Keeping water, waste, and gases flowing

Plumbers study the building plans and specifications to determine the layout for the plumbing and the type of pipe and tools to use; then assemble and install valves and fittings.

They provide recommendations on how to design mechanical and plumbing systems for new projects, as well as on replacing, modifying, and major repairs to existing systems.

Duties

  • Provide design recommendations for new and replacement mechanical and plumbing systems
  • Plan, assemble, install, inspect, repair, and service pipes, tubing, fittings, valves, controls, fixtures and related components of plumbing, gas, and medical gas systems
  • Complete preventative maintenance, which includes checking and recording new equipment, as well as testing and servicing existing equipment and preparing maintenance schedules

  • Improve the patient experience by maintaining facilities, fixtures and equipment
  • Contribute to public safety, protect the environment, and protect people and property from exposure to damage, bacteria, and other hazards associated with waste water
  • Ensure clean water, air, and medical gases are available and delivered to healthcare professionals and patients as needed

Work Collaboratively

  • Work closely with other tradespeople such as machinists, welders, and electricians
  • Coordinate, train, and assign work to non-journeyman staff
  • Work in different facilities including hospitals, medical centres and specialty institutions
