AHS Update: Additional funding for medical first responder agencies, progress made in hiring internationally educated nurses, vacation reminder for non-unionized employees

Full Version

Our Priorities

Medical first responder agencies to receive increased funding

Medical first responders (MFRs) are often the first to arrive on the scene and provide life-saving care until an ambulance arrives, especially in remote communities. Through the MFR Program, $3.85 million will be distributed to support efforts to improve the quality of emergency care in Alberta communities.

This support will increase the funding by $3.75 million this year and will expand the program to include medium and large MFR agencies across Alberta, including fire departments; urban, remote and rural municipalities; and Indigenous communities participating in the MFR Program. More than 200 MFR partner agencies across Alberta will receive targeted funding for emergency medical services (EMS).

The financial supports will help fund various supplies and services, including purchasing modern automated external defibrillators (AED), medical kits, CPR mannequins, instructor development and front-line responder training courses, as well as to offset some of the growing costs involved with providing MFR.

Healthcare Workforce Strategy — Internationally educated nurses

Recruitment of Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) is one of AHS' many strategies for addressing our workforce challenges, particularly in rural and remote areas.

AHS is working with these nurses every step of the way, from the moment they apply, through to assessment, immigration and integration into our workforce and communities.

To date, 43 IENs are working in Alberta. Another 242 have accepted positions with AHS and are awaiting immigration. AHS has set a goal to reach 500 acceptances by March 31, and we anticipate IENs will be a key part of our recruitment strategies over the next several years.

Careful attention to workplace and community integration is needed to ensure a positive, long-term experience for IENs. AHS continues to work with local site leaders and stakeholders to address the challenges that arise with moving to a new country, climate and culture, such as housing, transportation and fostering community connections.

Vacation reminder for non-unionized employees

Non-unionized employees are required to use at least three vacation days before the end of March.

This applies to all non-unionized employees, including senior leaders, management and non-unionized professional and technical employees.

Some exceptions and considerations will apply. For details, see frequently asked questions.

Vacation management guidelines are needed as part of our ongoing efforts to contain costs.

AHS staff and public parking rates to increase

Effective April 1, AHS staff and public parking rates will be adjusted to reflect local market rates and inflation costs.

AHS staff parking rates will increase between 3.18 and 3.3 per cent. Staff using e-People will see the parking rate changes take effect on March 25. The public adjusted rates will vary by market but, on average, daily rates will go up by 75 cents in large centres and 50 cents in smaller centres. The public rates haven't been increased in more than eight years. Increases are required to fund parkade maintenance and new builds.

Visit Insite for more information on staff parking rates, including frequently asked questions.

  • Worked from home at least 50 per cent of the time.
  • Received mileage reimbursement as part of their employment agreement.

Eligible employees must request a T2200 form in e-People Employee Self Service. Requests will be reviewed and approved/denied by your manager.
