Medical Radiation Technologist

Medical radiation technologists (MRTs) perform a variety of radiological imaging techniques to produce quality images used in the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of patients.

Imaging equipment used by and performed by MRTs include X-ray, fluoroscopy, CT scanning, interventional radiography, and mammography, as well as operating room studies.

Medical radiation technology diploma

Duties

  • Perform a variety of radiological imaging techniques, including X-ray, fluoroscopy, CT scanning, interventional radiography, mammography and operating room studies
  • Prepare patients for radiological examinations by explaining procedures, answering questions and responding to patient needs as required
  • Produce high quality images for radiologist interpretation and in accordance with physician requests

Make a Difference

  • Help patients, physicians, and other health professionals get the information they need for an accurate diagnosis
  • Facilitate monitoring and management of ongoing health concerns
  • Help physicians in preventative and pre-emptive treatment of disease
  • Participate in medical research studies
  • Collect data for public health surveillance

Work Collaboratively

  • Work directly with patients and collaborate with an interprofessional team that includes inpatient staff, technicians, cancer care, allied health, and physicians
  • Provide leadership and work guidance to fellow diagnostic imaging staff, radiography students, and other health care professionals
  • Work in a variety of facilities including hospitals, health centres, clinics, and more
