Therapy Assistant

Facilitating rehabilitation

Therapy assistants fulfill the key roles of service provider, collaborator, lifelong learner and paraprofessional.

They work directly with clients and caregivers, carrying out the care plans developed by therapists, audiologists or speech language pathologists.

These treatment programs help patients participate in activities, function independently and communicate effectively.

Duties

  • Provide functional and goal‐oriented services that help clients perform exercises and movements
  • Teach and support patients in learning or practicing skills, leading activity sessions, and provide education to patients, families, and caregivers
  • Observe, document, and report patient performance and behaviour to the supervising therapist, speech language pathologist, or audiologist
  • May also set up for therapy sessions, prepare activities, create program materials, arrange client appointments and assist with care planning

  • Provide helpful training, support, and information
  • Help clients learn or practice the skills needed for daily living to support independence, dignity, and quality of life
  • Encourage, monitor, report, and celebrate patient progress
  • Help to improve or maintain clients' abilities to function independently

Work Collaboratively

  • Work directly with patients and families, often one-on-one
  • Work with other healthcare professionals including: therapy assistants and aides, therapists, speech language pathologists, audiologists, physicians, nurses, volunteers, and external service providers
  • Work in a variety of settings including hospitals, clinics, client homes, and in continuing care and rehabilitation facilities
