Service Worker

Providing essential support

Service workers have a wide range of responsibilities, depending upon the facility, unit, program, or department they are part of.

They help porter patients between different hospital units, transport lab specimens, blood and blood products, or ensure examining and surgical rooms or nursing units are properly stocked with instruments, equipment, and other supplies, ready for use.

Duties

Service workers’ duties will vary depending upon the facility, unit, or program/department they work for, but may include the following:

  • Portering patients to and from different hospital units
  • Cleaning and disinfecting patient use items and equipment
  • Transporting lab specimens, blood, and blood products
  • Ensuring that multi-purpose examining rooms, outpatient surgery rooms, and entire units are properly and fully stocked with instruments, equipment and other supplies

Make a Difference

  • Transport patients who are ill or injured between units for diagnostic tests, appointments, etc.
  • Ensure patient use items and equipment is cleaned and disinfected, or maintain stock of single-use items
  • Transport lab specimens, blood, and blood products for lab analysis, use, or safe disposal
  • Help ensure facilities have the instruments, equipment, and supplies needed by health professionals

Work Collaboratively

  • Work with a variety of healthcare professionals and support staff
  • May directly interact with patients and families
  • Work in a variety of locations including hospitals, medical centres, and continuing care facilities
