Providing advanced-level nursing skills & expertise

Nurse practitioners (NP) are advanced practice nurses (APN) who integrate clinical skills associated with nursing and medicine. NPs have a broad and autonomous scope of practice with the ability to provide a full range of comprehensive health services to individuals across their lifespan.

With graduate level education, NPs contribute to collaborative inter-professional care through the competencies of advanced clinical practice, education, nursing leadership, and research.

Master's/PhD level education

Completion of an approved nurse practitioner program

Duties

  • Conduct advanced, comprehensive and/or focused health assessments
  • Diagnose medical conditions and disease
  • Order, interpret, and perform diagnostic tests
  • Prescribe pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and therapies
  • Make referrals to specialists
  • Perform non-invasive and invasive interventions including operative procedures if within scope
  • Provide care as Most Responsible Practitioner as part of a physician led team

  • Teach, counsel, support, and advocate on behalf of patients
  • Empower people to take better care of themselves
  • Precept and support education delivery for nurse practitioner students and other learners
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and policy development
  • Lead research projects that improve patient care and/or healthcare delivery

Work Collaboratively

  • Use a patient-focused care model that involves patients, families, and caregivers
  • Act as a mentor and coach for colleagues
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other healthcare providers including physicians, agencies, and community resources
  • Work in facilities across the spectrum of health services, such as intensive care, acute care, primary care, community health, long-term care, specialty areas of health and emergency care
  • Provide care using a variety of methods including virtually delivered care

Before applying to a nurse practitioner program, you must complete a bachelor's degree in nursing and have a minimum of 4500 hours of experience practicing as a registered nurse.
