Nurse Practitioner

Providing advanced-level nursing skills & expertise

Nurse practitioners (NP) are advanced practice nurses (APN) who integrate clinical skills associated with nursing and medicine. NPs have a broad and autonomous scope of practice with the ability to provide a full range of comprehensive health services to individuals across their lifespan.

With graduate level education, NPs contribute to collaborative inter-professional care through the competencies of advanced clinical practice, education, nursing leadership, and research.

Duties

  • Conduct advanced, comprehensive and/or focused health assessments
  • Diagnose medical conditions and disease
  • Order, interpret, and perform diagnostic tests
  • Prescribe pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and therapies
  • Make referrals to specialists
  • Perform non-invasive and invasive interventions including operative procedures if within scope of practice
  • Provide maternal health care including obstetrical if within scope of practice
  • Provide end of life care which may include care related to Medical Assistance in Death if within scope of practice in accordance with AHS policy
  • Provide care as Most Responsible Provider or as part of physician led team

  • Promote healthy living and good health practices to improve or maintain health
  • Teach, counsel, support, and advocate of behalf of patients
  • Empower people to better take care of themselves
  • Precept and support education delivery for nurse practitioner students and other learners
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and the development of policy
  • Lead research projects that improve patient care and/or healthcare delivery

Work Collaboratively

  • Use a patient-focused care model that involves patients, families, and caregivers
  • Act as a mentor and coach for colleagues
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other healthcare providers including physicians, agencies, and community resources to provide comprehensive patient/family centered care
  • Work in diverse facilities across the spectrum of health services settings, such as intensive care, acute care, primary care, community health, long-term care, specialty areas of health and emergency care
  • Provide care in a variety of settings including virtually delivered care

Did you know?

Before applying to a nurse practitioner program you must complete a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) and have a minimum of 2.5 years of experience practicing as a Registered Nurse.
