Audiologist

Hearing specialists

Audiologists help with more than just hearing loss – they also address ringing in the ear (tinnitus), and balance disorders.

These knowledgeable people also advocate for preventative measures against hearing loss for individuals, families, and the general public.

They work in a variety of settings with patients of all ages to prevent hearing loss and promote ear health.

Master's degree in audiology

Duties

  • Screen, identify, evaluate, and diagnose hearing and balance disorders
  • Prescribe, fit, and dispense hearing aids and other amplification and hearing technologies
  • Counsel, treat, and help manage/rehabilitate those with hearing concerns
  • Assess and treat individuals for cochlear implantation
  • Perform ear or hearing-related surgical procedures
  • Design and implement hearing preservation programs for individuals and the public

Make a Difference

  • Help people improve their hearing, communication, and ear health
  • Counsel patients with hearing loss, tinnitus, and balance disorders
  • Provide diagnostic service and educational support for hard-of-hearing students, their parents, and school staff
  • Promote hearing loss prevention and hearing health
  • Design and implement hearing preservation programs

Work Collaboratively

  • Support individuals, families, educators, and caregivers
  • Collaborate with and refer to other agencies and professionals, including: speech language pathologists, physicians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, ear-nose-throat (Ent) specialists, psychologists, social workers, and educators
  • Work in a variety of settings including clinics, community health, and educational settings
