Brooks Active August Challenge to begin July 27

July 22, 2016

BROOKS — This year’s Active August Challenge kicks off July 27 thanks to a partnership between Alberta Health Services (AHS), ChooseWell Brooks and other local organizations.

Throughout August, residents will compete in various physical activities and spend less time on sedentary activities such as watching TV, surfing the web and updating social media feeds.

Increased physical activity brings many health benefits; it helps individuals to maintain a healthy body weight, build social networks and improve attention and learning ability. It’s also a great way for families to spend time together and have fun.

Throughout the month, special events will be available throughout the city, free of charge, for registered Active August participants, who are required to track their physical activity. At the end of the month, they’ll be entered into a draw to win some great prizes, including the grand prize of a free year-long pass to the Lakeside Leisure Centre.

To register for the Active August Challenge, join us at Brooks City Hall Veterans Park on July 27 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for a free barbecue, sponsored by the Food Coalition Society of Brooks. For more information, please contact Laura Lukye, AHS Health Promotion Facilitator, at 403-793-6667.

The ChooseWell Brooks Committee was formed in 2006. Its members include local experts in health and wellness, drawn from organizations such as AHS, the City of Brooks, Parent Link Centre, Be Fit for Life, Grasslands School Division and the Christ Redeemer School. Its goal is to encourage Brooks residents to lead healthy, active lives.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.
