Patients

Alberta Health Services staff will partner with patients and family advisors for the 3rd Annual Quality & Safety Summit, which will take place on October 30th & 31st, 2017 at the Edmonton Expo Centre!

Our goal this year is that, through meaningful partnerships, we will inspire accelerated movement towards highest value care.

Patients Included

The 2017 Quality & Safety Summit is proud to be Patients Included. This means that we are committed to incorporating the experience of patients. We know that in order to be person centred, we need to co-design health services with patients and staff. In order to be Patients Included, conferenced must meet the following 5 criteria:

  1. Patients or caregivers with experience relevant to the conference’s central theme actively participate in the design and planning of the event, including the selection of themes, topics and speakers.

We are pleased to say that patient and family advisors have been involved in all aspects of planning and development for the Quality and Safety Summit. Our planning committees included several patient & family voices that were integral in the choosing of themes, topics, and speakers.

  2. Patients or caregivers with experience of the issues addressed by the event participate [2] in its delivery, and appear in its physical audience.

Patient and family advisors have been involved in co-planning, and will be co-facilitating, every session.

  3. Travel and accommodation expenses for patients or careers participating in the advertised program are paid in full, in advance.

Scholarships [3] are provided by the conference organizers to allow patients or careers affected by the relevant issues to attend as delegates. Patient attendance is important to the organizers of the Quality & Safety Summit - we need them there to discuss the future of our healthcare system! Rather than the need to apply for scholarships, every patient/family advisor that registered was able to do so at no cost. Further, travel and accommodation expenses will be paid in advance for patients and family advisors. Approximately 15% of this year’s attendees are identified as advisors.

  4. The disability requirements of participants are accommodated [4]. All applicable sessions, breakouts, ancillary meetings, and other program elements are open to patient delegates.

The planning committee intentionally chose a facility that is 100% accessible so that all participants are able to attend comfortably. It is also accessible via public transit for those who do not drive. We have also been sure to ask participants at the time of registration if there are any additional accessibility concerns that we should be aware of. Knowing in advance will allow us to fully accommodate everyone’s needs.

  5. Access for virtual participants is facilitated, [5] with free streaming video provided online wherever possible.

Anyone, regardless of location, will be able to tune into a live webcast of our two keynotes and two breakout sessions on October 31st. Live conversations will be happening on X throughout the summit on both days to encourage participants near and far to join in!
