Devon General Hospital, East Edmonton Health Centre added in web update

EDMONTON – Real-time estimated wait times for all emergency departments in the Edmonton Zone of Alberta Health Services (AHS), including urgent care services, are now available online, giving Albertans another tool to help them decide where to access care for themselves and their families.

Added today, wait times for the emergency department at the Devon General Hospital, as well as urgent care services at the East Edmonton Health Centre, complete the list of Edmonton Zone hospitals on the AHS website and mobile app.

In the Edmonton Zone, real-time estimated emergency department wait times continue to be provided 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for Fort Saskatchewan Community Hospital, Grey Nuns Community Hospital, Leduc Community Hospital, Misericordia Community Hospital, Northeast Community Health Centre, Royal Alexandra Hospital, Stollery Children’s Hospital, Sturgeon Community Hospital, University of Alberta Hospital, and WestView Health Centre.

The wait times posted reflect an estimate of how long it takes from an assessment by a triage nurse in the emergency department to being seen by a physician. Wait times do not represent the total time patients may spend at the hospital. The times are calculated through a software system, which uses current data from the facility that compares the number of people in the emergency department and how sick they are, with how many resources are available and required to treat those patients.

This calculation does not account for seriously ill patients, who will be seen immediately, and patients with non-urgent concerns, who may wait longer to be seen depending on resources.

Online estimated emergency department wait times were first posted for hospitals and urgent care centres in the Calgary Zone in July 2011, and then in the Edmonton Zone in June 2012, followed by the Red Deer Regional Hospital in early 2016 and the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital and Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge in September 2017.

Anyone needing emergency care is reminded to call 911, or to go to the nearest emergency department.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta.
