Walk-in addiction, mental health services now available in Wainwright

March 17, 2022

WAINWRIGHT – Alberta Health Services (AHS) is now providing walk-in addiction and mental health support for adults, in addition to existing services available by appointment.

Individuals can access walk-in addiction and mental health services Mondays and Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the local AHS Addiction and Mental Health office (905A 3 Ave).

“Alberta’s government is building a comprehensive recovery-oriented system of care,” says Mike Ellis, Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addictions. “Any Albertan struggling with mental health or addiction challenges will benefit from increased access to services that support their pursuit of recovery.”

Scheduled appointments can be challenging to keep for some individuals, says Maribela Arruda-Block, Director for Addiction and Mental Health in AHS Central Zone-Rural East.

“By providing a walk-in option, we are increasing the likelihood that some individuals will seek us out and find the support they need,” Arruda-Block says.

The service will provide single-session counselling on a first-come, first-served basis. The sessions, which run approximately 50 minutes, can also include referrals to other community resources. Addiction and mental health services continue to be offered by appointment for adults and youth Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., also at the Wainwright Addiction and Mental Health office.

“The introduction of walk-in services, in addition to those already offered through AHS’ community addiction and mental health office, will be welcome news for individuals and families struggling with addiction and mental health issues,” says Garth Rowswell, MLA for Vermilion-Lloydminster-Wainwright. “It’s important for area residents to be able to access counselling and treatment in their area, and greater access to these services will benefit the overall health of our communities.”

Individuals can call the Wainwright Addiction and Mental Health office at 780-842-7522 for more details. As always, there are supports available 24/7 across Alberta through the Addiction Helpline at 1-866-332-2322 and the Mental Health Helpline at 1-877-303-2642. There are also several resources available at ahs.ca/helpintoughtimes. Crisis services are available through the local emergency department or by calling 911.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta.
