Work underway to resolve Royal Alexandra Hospital heat issue

January 12, 2024

EDMONTON – Due to an air handling system issue caused by freezing temperatures across the Edmonton area, the Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH) Emergency Department (ED) triage and waiting room is experiencing a temporary heat disruption.

The RAH ED remains open to walk-in patients and our team is working hard to ensure patients continue to have access to the care they need.

To help ensure the safety and comfort of our patients and families waiting for emergent care, an area located within the ED will be used to provide a warmer space for those waiting. Temporary heaters are also being used.

As a temporary measure, patients arriving by EMS were diverted to other EDs in the Edmonton Zone for a short period of time, however that diversion is no longer in place. EMS patients requiring specialized care provided at the RAH, including obstetrics, continued to have access to the RAH ED.

The Facilities and Engineering team at the RAH have identified the problem with the air handling system and are working diligently to repair the issue as quickly as possible.
