AHS offers safe food handling certificate courses

September 11, 2012

RED DEER – Individuals needing their provincial certification in safe food handling can take part in a two-day sanitation and hygiene course, offered by Alberta Health Services (AHS) Environmental Public Health starting next month.

The course helps food handlers understand the potential health risks associated with food-borne illnesses, as well as the steps necessary to mitigate those risks. A provincial safe food handling certificate will be issued at the end of the course.

Food regulation requirements, including the safe food handling certificate, apply to a variety of public food facilities or operations including bed and breakfast food facilities, commercial caterers, delicatessens, farmers’ markets licensed by Alberta Agriculture and their stallholders, fast food restaurants, grocery stores, mobile food vendors, restaurants and temporary food facilities at special events such as fairs, festivals, exhibitions, carnivals and rodeos.

All courses are from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and cost $125. To register, please call 1-877-360-6366 ext. 1. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.
