CALGARY – Dr. Chris Eagle today announced that he is stepping down as the Chief Executive Officer and President of Alberta Health Services (AHS).
“This is a personal and very difficult decision, but it is one that is right for me and for our organization,” said Dr. Eagle. “I have spent the last three years leading AHS, the largest health care authority in the country, and it has been my privilege to have had that opportunity. This has been by far the most challenging work of my career, and it has also been the most rewarding.”
In the short term, Dr. Eagle will take some earned vacation time. Longer term, he and Dr. John Cowell, AHS Official Administrator, will determine his future role until he formally leaves the organization on Oct. 20, 2014. No severance will be paid as part of this process. An international search for a new CEO will begin immediately.
“Dr. Eagle has dedicated the past three years to this demanding position, and has shown his skills and commitment as a leader,” said Dr. Cowell. “I have known and worked with Dr. Eagle in various capacities for many years and have seen first-hand the positive contribution he has made to health care delivery in Alberta.”
Effective today, Duncan Campbell has been appointed Acting CEO and President. Mr. Campbell most recently has been serving as Vice President, Administration and Chief Financial Officer, for AHS. He has also previously held senior leadership roles with the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority.
“We remain focused on our patients and on serving Albertans,” said Dr. Cowell. “Our priorities and our commitment to providing quality care will not waver.”
Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than 3.9 million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.
