AHS program offers palliative care volunteer training

September 27, 2016

RED DEER – Area residents interested in making a difference for patients and their families in their community are encouraged to consider a volunteer training opportunity with Alberta Health Services (AHS) in palliative care.

Working as part of a diverse team of healthcare professionals, palliative care volunteers help support the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of patients and their loved ones.

In order to prepare for this role, registered volunteers must complete 12 hours of education and training prior to volunteering. Training provides an understanding of the medical care provided in the palliative care process, as well as helps prepare volunteers for how patients and families may respond emotionally.

The palliative care volunteer training course and information session will be held October 27 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and October 28 from 8:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Roland Michener Recreation Centre ─ 51A Street and 38 Ave, Red Deer.

The deadline to register as an AHS volunteer and enroll in the training program is October 11.

To register, please contact AHS Volunteer Resources, Erin Poissant at 403-343-4715 ext. 2 or erin.poissant@ahs.ca.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta.
