Patients notified about local endoscopy cleaning issue

About 500 individuals at low risk of exposure to infection; no ongoing risk

FAIRVIEW — About 500 individuals who underwent intestinal endoscopy procedures at the Fairview Health Complex between Nov. 4, 2013, and Jan. 30, 2019, are being notified they might be at low risk of exposure to blood-borne infections due to a process error in the cleaning of the instruments.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) became aware of this issue on Jan. 30, 2019, during a review of medical device cleaning and disinfection, and immediately suspended all endoscopy procedures. Through investigation, AHS confirmed cleaning of a small internal portion of the complex endoscope did not meet AHS’ standards of excellence in medical device reprocessing (MDR).

AHS has not confirmed any cases of illness associated with the cleaning process error.

The error has been addressed and poses no ongoing risk to patients. The Fairview Health Complex continues to offer safe and quality care to its patients.

As is routine in any potential exposure of this kind, AHS is offering standard followup testing for all potentially exposed individuals during the timeframe in question. While risk of infection is considered low, the 524 notified patients are advised to be tested and will be provided with instructions for simple blood testing that can rule out infection.

MDR is an essential service within a healthcare setting that includes the provision of safe surgical and diagnostic equipment. This includes specific procedures for cleaning and disinfecting of equipment.

To protect patient privacy and confidentiality, AHS will not be providing any further detail relating to the patients.
