SLAVE LAKE — A new Emergency Medical Services station for Slave Lake will allow for more efficient deployment of resources in life-and-death emergency situations.
More than $4.7 million will be spent on the new facility at the Slave Lake Healthcare Centre through the Rural Health Facilities Revitalization Program (RHFRP). Work on the new EMS station is expected to begin in the coming months and more detailed timelines will be shared once the project is underway.
“No matter where you live in the province, it’s important that your health care needs can be met as close to home as possible,” says Tyler Shandro, Minister of Health. “These projects help make that a reality, and are part of our commitment to manage and improve health infrastructure across Alberta.”
“We are pleased to have these funds going into the health care system,” says Dan Williams, MLA for Peace River. “Investments like these are an important part in ensuring Albertans have access to health care facilities that are safe and secure; places that provide high-quality care when they or their loved ones are sick or injured.”
The Alberta government’s $50-million commitment to the Rural Health Facilities Revitalization Program (RHFRP) supports Alberta Health Services to complete infrastructure projects over the next three years at rural sites across the province.
“Projects like these help maintain our facilities and ensure our patients receive quality care in the best environments,” says Dr. Verna Yiu, President and CEO of AHS. “So it is vital we keep our health care infrastructure current and up to date.”
In the last few years, more than $1.2 million has also been spent at the Slave Lake Healthcare Centre on Infrastructure Maintenance Program (IMP) projects including the replacement of the acute care reception desk and upgrades to the security system.
Currently almost $2 million is being spent on IMP projects at the healthcare centre including the replacement of the chiller and fire alarm system. Both projects are currently in the design phase and anticipated to be complete by early summer.
With the Budget 2021 Capital Plan, the Government of Alberta has committed $343 million over the next three years to the Infrastructure Maintenance Program (IMP) for infrastructure at health facilities across the province. AHS, in partnership with Alberta Infrastructure and Alberta Health, is building and renewing facilities across the province to provide accessible, sustainable, quality health care to all Albertans.
