Obstetrics service temporarily paused at Westlock hospital

May 19, 2021

WESTLOCK - The Westlock Healthcare Centre will be temporarily unable to provide C-sections as part of its obstetrics program beginning immediately due to a physician medical leave. Full obstetrical services are expected to resume July 12.

AHS is working hard to ensure local residents continue to have access to the care they need during this time. To ensure the safety of all patients, obstetrical services will be limited to low-risk patients as there will be no operating room capability for obstetrics in Westlock during this time.

AHS is working to ensure all expecting mothers have the support they need, including having a plan in place for where they will safely deliver their babies. This includes working closely with surrounding sites to offer additional support to Westlock patients, as needed. These sites include Barrhead Healthcare Centre (40 km away) and Sturgeon Community Hospital in

St. Albert (68 km away), as well as healthcare centres in Edmonton.

Patient safety is of utmost importance and AHS apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause. AHS is thankful for the support of surrounding healthcare centres and medical staff, and would like to thank the community for their patience and understanding during this time.
