To reduce the harms associated with smoking, second-hand smoke, and to address the rise in youth vaping, the Tobacco, Smoking and Vaping Reduction Act (TSVRA) came into effect July 31, 2021. The TSVRA introduces enforceable restrictions on the possession, promotion, display, sale and use of these products to help support our goal to de-normalize the consumption of tobacco and vaping products.

Alberta Health Services and Alberta Health created a Tobacco and Vaping Enforcement Program, which has been operational since January 2022.

The Enforcement Program works to improve compliance with the TSRVA and Regulation by:

• inspecting tobacco and vaping retailers to ensure compliance;
• educating retailers to help them meet requirements;
• working with other enforcement agencies to coordinate enforcement activities across the province; and
• responding to public complaints.

Retailers should review the Retailer Toolkit to be aware of their responsibilities under the Tobacco, Smoking and Vaping Reduction Act. This toolkit includes an overview of the legislation and regulation, and also includes tools that employers can use to ensure compliance.
