Virtual Emergency Physician pilot launches in four communities

AHS is launching a pilot project to improve support for emergency department (ED) patients in four northern rural communities: Beaverlodge, Elk Point, Hinton and Lac La Biche.

The new Virtual Emergency Physician program will use an experienced ED physician to remotely support facilities temporarily without available on-site ED physician support. In these instances, site clinical staff can connect with an AHS physician by telephone or videoconference for ED patients with non-life-threatening issues. This off-site virtual physician will collaborate with local staff; speak with patients; order tests and medications; and transfer, admit or discharge patients.

Similar models are currently being used in B.C., Saskatchewan and Ontario, where this approach has proven to be safe, reliable and effective in ensuring low-acuity patients receive the support they need when they need it. EMS remains available to transfer high-acuity patients to a facility with in-person ED physician support.

Indigenous Support Line hours change

The Indigenous Support Line can now be reached Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. by calling 1-844-944-4744 or 811.

This change from the previous operational hours (noon to 8 p.m.) reflects direct feedback from callers, including front-line care providers, who indicated that having listeners available in the morning hours would better serve clients.

The Indigenous Support Line is for any Indigenous patient or family who needs help navigating the healthcare system in the South, North and Central zones. Care providers can also call the line for support in providing culturally safe care.

For information, visit Indigenous Support Line.
