What To Expect

Your first visit is an Intake meeting that is typically held via ZOOM, followed by 1-2 in-person visits. All appointments are booked prior to the Intake visit. During your child’s Intake, we will gather information and clarify what assistive technology needs may be met, by you and your team. It is helpful to have key people involved at this appointment to participate in the discussion and to support the follow-up action that is required to help meet the identified goals. Telephone or videoconferencing may be used to bring the right people together.

Next, during the in-person visits, the I CAN team will assess the child’s abilities and strengths related to the assistive technology needs, such as language, vision, and physical skills. This will assist us in identifying the features and characteristics of technology that will be most useful for your child. Together, we develop a plan of action for follow-up services, as needed, which may include equipment trials, individual or group training sessions and/or attending an educational program. It will take a few sessions to complete the evaluation to find the best system for your child’s needs. If you are unable to travel to Edmonton for in-person appointments, the I CAN team may work with your community supports to provide services.

A written plan will be provided to you that details what we will do, and what you and community members will do to achieve your child’s goals within a certain timeframe. You may have access to our resources, materials, device assessment, loan library and technical support. Instruction will be provided to you and your community supports to help your child and team develop the skills and strategies to use assistive technology.

We want you and your child to be active participants in this process. You can ensure that we have the most current information about your child, and that the key people involved will participate in the evaluation and planning.  Much of the work with assistive technology happens during device trials and after a device has been purchased, so it is important that we work closely with the people who will be assisting you. We depend on your feedback, to ask for help when you need it and to let us know when things are not working or need to be re-evaluated, as well as when things are going well for you.

Fees

There is no fee for the service itself, but if appropriate assistive technology equipment is recommended, the family may be required to pay for all or a portion of the equipment cost.  Funding sources may include support through Alberta Aids to Daily Living (AADL), Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB), and private insurance.
