Surveillance

Public Health Laboratory (ProvLab)

Public Health Laboratory (ProvLab) plays are key role in infectious disease surveillance in partnership with public health partners in Alberta Health Services and Alberta Health.

Depending on the disease being monitored, the surveillance system may be designed in different ways, varying from simple passive surveillance based on positive laboratory test results, to active and enhanced surveillance systems involving a variety of different partners involving real-time reporting of positive cases.

The mandatory reporting of diseases in Alberta is carried out under the direction of the Chief Medical Officer of Health, Alberta Health, and is detailed in the notifiable diseases guidelines.

Within Public Health Laboratory (ProvLab) works in partnership with the Public Health Surveillance team.

Public Health Laboratory (ProvLab) and Alberta Health Public Health provide data to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) as part of national disease surveillance initiatives.
