Why was the Diabetes Eye Care Clinical Pathway created?

Diabetic retinopathy is the main cause of vision loss in the working age population and is often asymptomatic until advanced. Alberta data shows that only 47% of people living with diabetes are seen annually by an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

The key to preventing vision loss is early detection and treatment of diabetic retinopathy through a diabetes eye health exam by either an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

To increase screening rates and support early detection and treatment of diabetic retinopathy, the Diabetes, Obesity & Nutrition SCN, in partnership with the Neurosciences, Rehabilitation & Vision SCN, has developed the Diabetes Eye Care Clinical Pathway (DECCP).

Objectives

  • Improve provider and patient awareness about the importance of regular screening for diabetic retinopathy
  • Increase the number of patients who receive a diabetic retinopathy screen
  • Improve coordination of care between optometrists and primary care
  • Decrease the number of patients with advanced diabetic retinopathy
