Patient Process After the Online Sleep Course

Your decision based on your sleep symptoms

If you think you might have Obstructive Sleep Apnea (snoring and stopping breathing while sleeping) you have the option of choosing one of the 3 following options to be diagnosed and treated.

  1. Respiratory Homecare Company
  2. Private Sleep Clinic
  3. Continue on our waitlist**

If you have any other sleep disorder, the following 2 options are available.

  1. Private Sleep Clinic
  2. Continue on our waitlist**

** We will automatically keep you on our waitlist once you complete the following Sleep Questionnaire.

If you choose to follow one of the previous options instead of staying on our waitlist, please call the Sleep Centre at 944-2404 to inform us

  •  Fill out our Online Sleep Questionnaire. We will use the questionnaire to aid in our triage process (getting sickest patients in urgently) and to ensure you see the correct physician on the first visit.
  • Once you have completed the Online Sleep Class and Sleep Questionnaire we will triage your referral within 2 weeks.

Current Waitlist

  • Normal referral - 12 to 15 months
  • Semi-urgent referral - 3 to 4 months
  • Urgent referral - within 1 to 2 months

We do not have any fees at the Sleep Centre. We do not charge for any of our testing, to see our physicians or our psychologist.

Respiratory Homecare Companies

There are several homecare companies within Calgary that we use for our trials of CPAP. These companies can also perform the same at-home sleep study (SnoreSat) to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea. You:

  • Need to be referred directly to the company by your family physician.
  • Will be charged for the SnoreSat (approximately $150). This is the only fee that will be charged.
  • If you purchase a CPAP machine you would either pay for it yourself or have insurance coverage. This is no different than if you came to the Sleep Centre.
  • Results will be interpreted by a sleep specialist but you do not see the specialist.
  • Family doctor discusses the results with you and gets you on the appropriate therapy (CPAP, dental appliance, urgent referral to the Sleep Centre.)
  • The companies are likely able to do this testing within 2 weeks.
  • Once you follow-up with your family physician they are also able to get you onto CPAP therapy within a couple of weeks.

This is a very quick, safe approach for many patients to be assessed for obstructive sleep apnea.

Private Sleep Clinics

Canadian Sleep Institute & Centre for Sleep and Human Performance are 2 private sleep clinics in Calgary that can diagnose and treat any sleep disorder. They require:

  • Referral from family physician
  • Fees for at-home sleep study
  • Fees for polysomnography (in-clinic sleep study)

At both clinics the sleep specialist will discuss your results and follow-up your treatment progress. The main advantage to going to the private clinics is that they have a shorter waitlist than the Sleep Centre. There may be fees associated with each clinic visit.
