Spiritual health consultants are advanced-level, clinical health professionals who support the spiritual health of patients, families, and clinicians. They foster spiritual health and well-being in patients and families, within a specific program or discipline, such as Indigenous Health, Cancer Care, Continuing Care, or Palliative Care.

They also participate in program, service, and zone evaluation and quality improvement specific to advanced level direct service delivery as well as training and knowledge sharing for their clinical area.

Certified Spiritual Care Practitioner

Duties

  • Provide advanced-level, program-specific spiritual health guidance and consultation on complex cases
  • Promote patients and families spiritual wellbeing through:
    • Spiritual reflection
    • Spiritual counsel
    • Support of spiritual practices
    • Provision of meaningful rituals, ceremonies, and services
    • Assisting in their own creative expression of spirituality

Make a Difference

  • Support clinicians, patients, and families coping with the stress and demands of hospitalization, patient diagnosis or prognosis
  • Help clinicians understand patient and family preferences, ongoing concerns, and support strategies that work best for them
  • Participate in program, service, and zone evaluation, quality improvement for your program area
  • Support and inform best practices, training, and knowledge sharing

Work Collaboratively

  • Work with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals
  • Collaborate with other spiritual leaders within the community from various faiths, clergy members, religious advisors, and faith-based organizations
  • Coach and mentor other spiritual health practitioners, clinicians, program administrators, and healthcare administrators
  • Advise managers in clinical decision-making, professional development, and resource needs in relation to the patient population
