Physician assistants (PA) are licensed healthcare professional who works under the supervision of physicians to provide a wide range of medical services. They are trained to assess patients, order tests, diagnose illnesses, develop and implement treatment plans, and educate patients on health maintenance.

A central member of the healthcare team, PAs may also contribute to healthcare program development, research and evaluation within the healthcare setting.

Duties

  • Provide comprehensive patient care, including assessment, testing, and diagnoses
  • Create a patient care plan
  • Consult with and refer to other health care professionals as indicated
  • Provide clinical instructions and fully document all aspects of patient care
  • Support discharge planning process as needed
  • Review clinical care in the light of evidence-based literature

  • Advocate for patient needs and take appropriate action to ensure patient safety and well-being
  • Monitor and share patients’ progress and reactions to treatment with the health care team

  • Provide leadership, program development, and evaluation of care outcomes

Work Collaboratively

  • Work with an interdisciplinary healthcare team, including physicians, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, rehabilitation specialists, social workers, administrative staff, and management
