Acute care coverage

The Alberta Clinical and Surgical Assistant Program (ACSAP) provides International Medical Graduates (IMGs) with an alternate career path to become a associate physician. After successfully completing the required six-month assessment and evaluation, this program can lead to a permanent full-time acute care coverage role.

Associate physicians perform patient assessments, document patient history, and develop treatment plans in consultation with the attending physician to make a difference every day.

Duties

  • Provide clinical support under the direction of medical staff
  • Document patient history and perform patient examinations
  • Develop a treatment plan in consultation with the attending/supervising physician
  • Write orders, enter, and track them within appropriate systems
  • May also provide pre- and post-operative care as well as intra-operative surgical assistance

  • Advocate for patient needs and take appropriate action to ensure patient safety and well-being
  • Monitor and share patients’ progress and reactions to treatment with the health care team
  • Educate and provide information to patients, families, and caregivers

  • Work with an interdisciplinary healthcare team, including physicians, residents, nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, rehabilitation specialists, administrative staff, and management
  • Work directly with patients and families
