Acute care coverage

The Alberta Clinical and Surgical Assistant Program (ACSAP) provides International Medical Graduates (IMGs) with an alternate career path to become a associate physician. After successfully completing the required six-month assessment and evaluation, this program can lead to a permanent full-time acute care coverage role.

Associate physicians perform patient assessments, document patient history, and develop treatment plans in consultation with the attending physician to make a difference every day.

Duties

  • Provide clinical support under the direction of medical staff
  • Document patient history and perform patient examinations
  • Develop a treatment plan in consultation with the attending/supervising physician
  • Write orders, enter, and track them within appropriate systems
  • May also provide pre- and post-operative care as well as intra-operative surgical assistance

  • Advocate for patient needs and take appropriate action to ensure patient safety and well-being
  • Monitor and share patients’ progress and reactions to treatment with the health care team

  • Work with an interdisciplinary healthcare team, including physicians, residents, nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, rehabilitation specialists, administrative staff, and management

Alberta Clinical and Surgical Assistant Program (ACSAP)

Physicians who have completed their medical training and applied to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta for limited practiceregistration may apply for Associate Physician positions under the Alberta Clinical and Surgical Assistant Program (ACSAP).
