Talk to your doctor first to make sure it’s safe for you to travel. You are responsible for setting up your dialysis treatments while you’re away. You must find and book a dialysis clinic at your travel destination before you book your flight or hotel.

Contact the Clinic
When you call:
- Ask if they have space for you.
- Find out:
- what supplies you may need to bring for your treatments.
- what information they need from you and when they need it.
- all costs including blood tests or doctor visits.
- Book your appointments.
After Booking Your Appointments
Your AKC Dialysis Nurse Will Need
- List of info the clinic asked for
- Your travel dates
- City and country you’re visiting
- Contact info for the clinic you’ll go to
Your AKC Dialysis Nurse Will Help
- Prepare a package to send to the clinic.
Paying for Dialysis
- You will need to pay for dialysis and supplies outside of Canada.
- After each treatment, ask for two receipts:
- One from the dialysis clinic
- One from the doctor
Note: Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) may pay back part of the cost. Ask your social worker for the current amount they cover.

After Your Holiday
Once you are back in Alberta again, to get money back from the Government of Alberta. Visit their website to find out more about how to submit a claim for insured health services.
If your receipts are in another language:
- you must translate them into English
- send both the original and the translation
Ask your AKC doctor for a note that says:
- How many days you had dialysis outside Alberta
- How often you get dialysis in Alberta
Travelers from Outside of Alberta / Canada
We will work with you to accommodate your travel request at a hemodialysis unit depending on available space at the time you are requesting. Space is limited so book early to avoid disappointment.
- Allow a minimum of 4 weeks before your travel dates to contact a clinic.
- You will be required to make payment for treatment before you arrive.
