Many diseases have a genetic component. Genetic disorders (also referred to as genetic conditions or syndromes) are caused by one or more changes in specific genes that are often present from birth (congenital). Most genetic conditions are rare, but given that there are thousands of different genetic conditions; roughly 1 in 12 Canadians are impacted.
