Preparing for Your Surgery

You may have already received a copy of these resources in preparation for your heart surgery. If you haven’t received them, print them and complete all forms as directed by your healthcare team.

For Your Stay

Handwashing is required upon entry and exit of the area.

Anyone with a fever, cough, runny nose, vomiting, diarrhea, or a communicable disease (like chickenpox) should not accompany you to the operating room (OR).

You and your family will be brought to the Maz OR by one of our service workers.  We request that visitors that accompany you to the OR be limited to 2-3 people. Our doors are secured by card access only so if you family arrive late, they can gain access by calling 780-407-4300 and a staff member will let them in.

If you are a patient coming into the hospital from same day admission, your belongings will be brought with you to the OR and then taken by your family for safe storage until you require them.

Parking Information

There is a cost for parking, refer to the parking map for rates.

Finding Us

Maz Cardiac Operative Services is located in 3A9 in the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute (Maz). From the east parkade, take the 2nd level pedway towards the Maz, turn right before the information desk and take the elevator to the 3rd floor.

From the Health Sciences/Jubilee LRT station, take the escalator upstairs and use the second level pedway to cross 114th street to enter the University of Alberta Hospital. Head straight past the café and look for the signage to the Maz on your right-hand side.

If entering through the main entrance of the Maz on the main floor, turn right and walk towards the elevators. Take the elevator to the 3rd floor.

What to Expect

A healthcare team consisting of physicians and nurses will discuss your care and answer any questions you may have prior to you entering the Operating Room.

After patients leave for surgery, our staff will take all family members to the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) (3A7/3A8) to meet the unit clerk. Family members planning on leaving the hospital during the surgery are encouraged to leave a contact phone number so staff can notify them when the doctor will be available in the 3A8 waiting room for a post-operative meeting. Families remaining in the hospital during the surgery will be provided with a pager.

Once the surgery is complete you will be transferred to our CVICU for approximately one to three days; afterwards you will be transferred to our Cardiac Surgery Inpatient Units (4A5/4A6) for the remainder of your hospital stay.
