Exposure Locations & Dates

Individuals who are not protected against measles AND who visited the following places on the dates indicated below may have been exposed and are at higher risk of developing measles. Information will be updated regularly as new cases are identified. Note: this list includes known exposure locations where we are unable to identify and contact those exposed, directly. Individuals exposed in other identifiable settings may be informed by AHS directly, through phone call or letter.

  • Anyone who attended these locations at these times who was born in or after 1970 should review their immunization records and confirm if they are fully immunized (documentation of 2 doses of measles containing vaccine on or after 1 year of age).
  • Individuals who were born in or after 1970 who are not fully immunized are at risk of developing measles and should monitor themselves for symptoms.
  • With measles currently circulating in the specific areas, anyone who lives in North, Central and South Zones are also currently recommended and eligible for additional immunizations:
    • Infants who are 6 months up to and including 11 months of age are recommended to receive an early dose of vaccine. However, they should still receive their routine two doses after they reach one year of age.
    • If you were born before 1970 and have not been immunized, you can discuss with your healthcare provider a single dose of measles vaccine.
  • If symptoms of measles develop, stay home and call Health Link at 811. If you need medical care, call Health Link at 811 before visiting any healthcare facility or provider, including a family physician clinic or pharmacy. Tell them you have been exposed to measles and have symptoms.
Note: if you visit a healthcare facility with symptoms of measles, you may be asked to wait in your car until a safe space is available to assess and treat.
  • In addition, individuals who are not fully immunized who are pregnant, under one year of age, and/or who have a weakened immune system should contact Health Link at 811 promptly if exposed as they may be eligible for vaccine or immune globulin to reduce the risk of developing measles.

Ongoing Measles Transmission in Alberta

Cases have been reported across all Zones, and in clusters of high numbers, particularly in Southern, Central and parts of Northern Alberta. Effective immediately a standing measles exposure advisory for South Zone and these locations in the North Zone: The Hamlet of La Crete, St. Theresa General Hospital in Fort Vermilion and Northwest Health Centre in High Level have been issued until further notice. About Measles

Measles is extremely contagious. Measles is a virus that spreads easily through the air when someone who has measles coughs, sneezes, yells, sings, and breathes. You can get measles just by passing through a room or location where a person who is infected was up to 2 hours before. The person who is infected does not still need to be there to put you at risk of disease. The best protection against measles is to ensure you are up to date with your immunizations.

Measles Health Advisories

Measles cases are increasing globally, with numerous countries and travel destinations reporting outbreaks including the United States and Europe. Cases have been identified recently in several Canadian provinces, including Alberta.
